After years of no contention in Mexico, the National Wrestling Alliance has officially stripped former member CMLL of all NWA titles and usage of the NWA trademarks, transferring them to former NWA World Heavyweight Champion Blue Demon, Jr.'s new NWA Mexico promotion.

Although CMLL has not been an NWA member since 1980, it still promoted the NWA World Light Heavyweight Championship, NWA World Middleweight Championship and NWA World Welterweight Championship, which were all unsanctioned and only defended at CMLL events. Without any representation in Mexico, CMLL's usage went unchallenged for nearly 30 years.

On March 4th, Blue Demon, Jr. held a press conference in Mexico making the official announcement, acting on behalf of the NWA in Mexico. In addition to stripping CMLL from the NWA trademark and usage of those titles, it was announced that a tournament would be held later this year to crown new champions. NWA Mexico has sent letters to other Mexican promotions, including CMLL and AAA, inviting them to send representatives for the tournament.

This didn't go down without controversy, however. Blue Demon, Jr. is a former CMLL star who fell out of fellowship with the promotion after he won the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, and is using his influence and popularity among fans and advertisers alike to secure his position within the NWA. Many see the formation of NWA Mexico as a thumb of the nose to CMLL, and rumors state that CMLL feels that Blue Demon, Jr. doesn't represent the NWA and that neither of them have any legal standing in Mexico. On March 16th, NWA Exectuive Directory Robert K. Trobich made it clear that Blue Demon, Jr. is their representative in Mexico and that his NWA Mexico promotion has sole authority over those Mexican titles.
